The rebirth of MCM is an assurance of continued existence of media independence, media freedom and freedom of expression in Malawi.

MISA Malawi and Media Council of Malawi (MCM) would like to inform media owners, media practitioners and the general public that the Council has a new Executive Director, Mr. Moses Kaufa.

Mr Kaufa was officially unveiled at Hippo View Lodge in Liwonde during the re-launch of MCM on Tuesday, December 31, 2019. The re-launch provided a platform for stakeholders to appreciate the new media self-regulation model that will be guiding MCM.  It also provided an opportunity to stakeholders to offer direction on some of the critical issues for MCM to tackle in 2020 and beyond.

The Council has been dormant for the past three years and efforts to resuscitate it started in 2018.

The new MCM ED is a professional in Mass Communication with over 10 years’ experience in project management, individual, institutional and community capacity strengthening, audio-visual production, resource mobilisation and community development.

Among others, Mr. Kaufa is expected to spearhead organisational rebirth of MCM, assist media houses and journalists in designing and implementing in-house self-regulation mechanisms and strategies to uphold highest standards of professionalism.

We wish Mr Kaufa all the best as he takes up the responsibility of steering media self-regulation and implementing the Malawi Media Code of Conduct for the practice of journalism in the country.

MISA Malawi and MCM would like to thank media owners in the country for committing to financially support MCM until it is able to operate on its own.

MISA Malawi would also like to thank DW Akademie, Germany’s leading organisation for media development, for supporting the development of a media self-regulation model, a process that has led to the resuscitation of the Council. The model aims at providing a viable media self-regulation system for Malawi and the region.

As we embark on a new path for MCM and media self-regulation in the country, we would like to appeal to media owners, media practitioners and the general public to continue believing and supporting media self-regulation through the work of MCM.

The rebirth of MCM is an assurance of continued existence of media independence, media freedom and freedom of expression in Malawi.
