Essential public communication skills

MISA Malawi’s Essential Public Communication workshop ensures your skills move the next level. It equips you to professionally deal with the media by successfully delivering a core message and communicating effectively.

Course content

The two-day course has a focus on practical exercises done with working journalists in front of the camera. This is followed by immediate video review of your performance with in-depth feedback from our trainers.

Settings for exercises include:

  • TV interviews
  • press conferences
  • public speaking

You will learn how to:

  • better deal with the media
  • provide on-the-spot answers
  • get your message across
  • use facial expressions, gestures and body language to your advantage

Who should attend?

Those who need to speak to media on a professional basis or who are in the media spotlight and want to hone their professional image, including:

  • managers, executives
  • political leaders, (senior) officials
  • communication professionals from public or private organizations, NGOs
  • spokespersons of ministries, unions, federations, associations

Who are the trainers?

MISA Malawi trainers are experienced, practising journalists and communications specialists who have completed a rigorous ‘Train the Trainer’ course to develop their training expertise. They have also conducted workshops alongside trainers from DW Akademie, Germany’s media development organisation, to benefit from their international experience.

Where is the course held?

Course offered in Lilongwe are held at MISA Malawi’s purpose-built media training centre: Mtolankhani House, Plot 99 in the Acacia area, Lilaga Community.

The centre is equipped with:

  • cameras
  • hand-held professional microphones
  • computers
  • projectors and projector screens
  • high-speed internet.

It includes:

  • two large well ventilated training rooms
  • air conditioning
  • library
  • kitchen
  • outside luncheon area
  • ample car parking.

The training centre at Mtolankhani House is located about 7km from Gateway Mall. From town, take the Mchinji Road, turn right on the newly constructed Kasiya Road. Turn left at the Acacia signpost and follow the signposts from there to Mtolankhani House.
