Voter-centred election reporting for radio
Course content
The three-day course includes:
- role and responsibilities of journalists in the election period
- phases of elections
- understanding and analysing party manifestos
- finding election issues relevant to voters
- research and fact checking
- techniques to keep interviews on track and get answers
- tips for dealing with political influence and media intimidation
Using a combination of theory and hands-on practice, trainers will guide the participants through the radio production process and give in-depth feedback to enhance radio skills.
Radio formats explored include:
- interviews
- debates
- round tables, discussions
- phone-in programmes
- radio features
- voxpops
- news reports
Participants will have the use of MISA Malawi’s audio recorders, microphones and headphones for the duration of this course.
Who should attend?
The course is valuable for both experienced and entry-level journalists because of its focus on voter-centered (or issues-based) reporting – a type of election reporting that is relatively unknown in Malawi.
Who are the trainers?
MISA Malawi trainers are experienced, practising journalists and communications specialists who have completed a rigorous ‘Train the Trainer’ course to develop their training expertise. They have also conducted workshops alongside trainers from DW Akademie, Germany’s media development organisation, to benefit from their international experience.
Where is the course held?
Course offered in Lilongwe are held at MISA Malawi’s purpose-built media training centre.
The centre is equipped with:
- audio recording kits
- modern computers equipped with audio editing software
- projectors and projector screens
- high-speed internet.
It includes:
- two large well ventilated training rooms
- air conditioning
- library
- kitchen
- outside luncheon area
- ample car parking.

Mtolankhani House is located about 7km from Gateway Mall. From town, take the Mchinji Road, turn right on the newly constructed Kasiya Road. Turn left at the Acacia signpost and follow the signposts from there to Mtolankhani House.
