The Malawi Chapter of the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA Malawi) would like to notify its paid up and prospective members that it will hold the 2026 National Governing (NGC) Elections on Saturday, May 9, 2026.
This notice is made in line with Article 6.5 Subsection (iii) that the notice for NGC elections ‘…shall be issued at least 60 days before the date of elections.’
Members interested to contest for positions in the NGC are required to meet the following conditions in line with Article VI, 6.1, 6.2 and 6.5 subsections (i) and (iii) of the MISA Malawi Constitution:
6.1 Members of the NGC …shall serve for a period of three years unless re-elected, provided that a person shall be eligible to serve in the NGC for a maximum period of two terms.
6.2 At any time the composition of the NGC shall have representation from the three regions of Malawi. In the event that no member from a region is elected the AGM shall reserve a position and entrust the newly elected NGC to co-opt a member and such a member shall represent a region.
6.5. (i) A person shall be eligible to contest for positions in the NGC if he/she has been an active member of MISA Malawi for at least last two consecutive years preceding the elections.
(ii) Members aspiring for positions of Chairperson and Vice Chairperson shall be required to announce their aspirations and submit their manifestos to the Secretariat at least 21 days before the day of elections. The Secretariat shall in turn send the said manifestos to all members at least 14 days before the date of elections.
The membership should also take note that ‘a person shall be eligible to vote for a position in the National Governing Council if he or she has been a paid-up member of MISA Malawi for at least two consecutive years preceding the elections.’ This is in line with the results of the online voting to amend the constitution to ensure that only committed MISA Malawi members are eligible to vote as recommended during the 2019 MISA Malawi AGM at St John of God Complex in Mzuzu.
Note that deadline for renewal of membership for the normal membership renewal fees is April 30, 2026. All those interested to vote during the elections will also be required to renew their membership on or before April 30, 2026 so that the voters roll can be updated and circulated for verification before polling day.
Further details pertaining to the elections will be provided in due course.
As usual MISA will engage the Malawi Electoral Commission to manage the polls.
Lastly, note that the 2026 MISA Malawi World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) celebrations and Awards Gala Dinner will take place in Salima from Friday, May 1 to Saturday, May 2. Further details will also be provided in due course
