DW Akademie’s Dialogue Fund is inviting journalists and newsrooms from Southern Africa to apply for an innovative fellowship programme focused on developing AI solutions for public service journalism that combine innovation and integrity.
What is the fellowship looking for?
Do you have an idea for using AI – including machine learning, generative AI, or natural language programming – to serve your audience better? DW Akademie wants to support hands-on, innovative solutions that combine innovation with integrity: finding new ways to solve problems whilst maintaining truth-telling and reliable information.
What You’ll Receive
Each selected team will receive a €4,000 fellowship to implement their idea, specialised coaching and technical support, training in human-centred design and product development, and participation in the idea lab in Windhoek, Namibia for up to two team members. You’ll also join a community of media innovators across Southern Africa for ongoing exchange and support.
Programme Structure
The fellowship begins with an intensive IdeaLab week from 26-30 January 2026 in Windhoek, Namibia, where you’ll refine your idea, build a prototype, and exchange with fellow innovators. Following this, you’ll enter the build phase to develop your project with seed funding, coaching, and technical support, whilst engaging in ongoing virtual sessions with the community.
Eligibility
Applicants must be based in Namibia, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia, Eswatini, or Lesotho, be aged 21 or older with a valid passport, and have endorsement from their organisation. You must be committed to ethical journalism principles and available for full programme participation, including in-person and virtual elements. The application is open for civil-society organisations that work journalistically as well – like fact checkers, information providers or community platforms.
