We want to see journalists professionally disseminating different media content on elections on TikTok
As Malawians prepare for general elections slated for September 16, 2025, MISA Malawi has organised a five-day TikTok Journalism and Elections training for some journalists covering elections.
The training is scheduled for July 21 to 25, 2025 (Monday to Friday) at MISA Malawi Training Centre (Mtolankhani House) in Lilongwe. It aims to equip journalists with knowledge and skills on using TikTok for responsible journalism and dissemination of information around elections.
MISA Malawi Chairperson Golden Matonga said the training is the Chapter’s recognition that a good number of the electorate, especially young people, is using TikTok and there is a need to follow such people with accurate information.
“We want to see journalists professionally disseminating content on elections on TikTok, just like they do on Facebook and websites,” Matonga said.
He added that the training will cover essential areas, including techniques for creating engaging TikTok content and basic fact-checking and information verification skills. Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) is also expected to take the participants through the process of managing elections.
MISA Malawi has organised the training in partnership with DW Akademie, Germany’s leading organisation for international media development and Deutsche Welle’s centre of excellence for education and knowledge transfer.
In the run up to the elections, MISA Malawi – DW Akademie partnership has already seen journalists being trained in Voter-Centred Elections Reporting, Conflict-Sensitive Reporting and Fact-Checking Skills, among other election-related sessions.
