The meeting agreed to engage further to help iron out some of the areas that create antagonism.

New MISA Malawi National Governing Council (NGC) met State House Communications team in Lilongwe today, July 17, to explore possible areas of collaboration including more direct interaction between the media and President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera.

MISA Malawi chairperson Golden Matonga acknowledged that government had introduced a number of initiatives to ensure transparency in government operations citing the introduction of the ‘State House Press Briefings’ and ‘Government Meets the Press’ but noted that there was need for the media to directly interact with the President at times.

Matonga also noted that it was important to ensure inclusivity when inviting journalists and media outlets to State House functions.

State House Director of Communications Kent Mphepo, who was accompanied by State House Press Secretary Anthony Kasunda and Deputy Director of Communications Wezi Kasambala, welcomed the engagement and expressed hope that the meeting was a step towards a more cordial and strategic partnership between the media and government.

He pointed out that State House has always been ready to support and work with the media to help Malawi achieve the 2063 agenda and other short and medium term national development frameworks.

Among others, the meeting agreed to explore and engage further to help iron out some of the areas that create antagonism between the media and government whilst promoting free expression and professionalism
