MISA Malawi is inviting interested paid up members to submit their published stories for the 2023 MISA Malawi annual media awards. The awards will be given out as part of the celebrations to mark the 2023 World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) scheduled for Saturday, May 6 at Sunbird Capital Hotel in Lilongwe.
The awards will include two new categories:
- Best Older Persons’ Journalist of the Year Award: This award aims to raise awareness on the rights of older persons and the challenges they are facing. The award also aims to recognise exceptional newspaper, radio, television and online stories/reports with a particular focus on any or all of the following areas:
- Examples of best practice in holistic/multi-sectoral efforts to help older people claim their rights
- Stories that challenge discrimination of older people and overcome poverty, so that they can lead dignified, secure, active and healthy lives
- Role of older persons in community and national development
The award will be sponsored by Malawi Network for Older Persons Organisations (MANEPO), a consortium of Civil Society Organisations whose aim is to help older people claim their rights.
(b) Best Podcast of the Year Award: This award aims to recognise outstanding podcast. The award seeks to motivate journalists and the media sector to embrace podcasting as a viable and growing platform to reach out to a wider audience. The award will be sponsored by DW Akademie.
On this basis, the 2023 MISA Malawi Annual Media Awards will have the following categories:

- MISA Malawi will also recognize the following categories:

- Electronic media house of the year award: Television
- Electronic media house of the year award: Online
MISA Malawi members will be required to vote/nominate their respective winners under Lifetime Achiever and Print and Electronic Media House of the year awards. Entries for Ralph Tenthani Columnist of the year should be accompanied by motivations and samples of the nominees’ published works. These should be emailed to info@misamalawi.com copied to director@misamalawi.org on or before April 30, 2023.
Media houses are also free to nominate themselves for the Media House of the Year Award in line with the Rules and Regulations governing the awards in question. The media house of the year awards will be open for nomination between 15th and 30th April, 2023.
The MISA Malawi awards committee will evaluate entries based on the following:
- Impact
- Consistency
- Courage
- Investigation
- Gender awareness
- Analysis
- Relevance
The awards committee will accept entries published or aired between 1st April, 2022 and 31st March, 2023. The deadline for receiving individual entries is March 31, 2023 and April 30, 2023 for those based on nominations. Individuals can only send a maximum of two entries per category.
