Media institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Malawi chapter has restated its commitment to continue providing training to journalists in order to assist them cope with recent trends in the industry.
Misa Malawi Chairperson Teresa Ndanga said this in Lilongwe at the end of a week-long essential television reporting skills for journalists which the media body organised in collaboration with Germany-based DW Akademie.
DW Akademie is a media body for education, knowledge transfer and media development.
Ndanga said the training was important as it empowered local journalists with skills on how to tell stories on television using simple technologies at a time most local stations are operating on limited resources.
“In our country, television is relatively new and not many people had specific training on TV reporting. That is why we thought of conducting this training with our partners (DW Akademie) so that our stations meet international standards,” Ndanga said.
She said the training was among various others which the media body has been conducting and plans to conduct targeting various areas in the local media industry.
Ndanga said the media body was expanding the training facilities at its Mtolankhani House in Lilongwe to reach out to as many journalists as possible with practical knowledge of the trade.
“As we are speaking now, works to extend MISA Malawi training centre are ongoing; so, we would like to invite those who would like to partner with us as we try to improve how journalists report for TV so that our standards are at par with international standards,” Ndanga said.
Trainer from DW Akademie, Stefanie Duckstein, said the training symbolised the growing relations between MISA Malawi and her institution since 2018 when the institution supported MISA Malawi in building a training centre.
“For this training, we included sessions on mobile reporting where participants are now able to shoot and edit videos for broadcast using their mobile gadgets,” Duckstein said.
MISA Malawi has also provided training to journalists from community radio stations and public relations professionals across the country.
