27 Jul, 2017
MISA Malawi is shocked and deeply saddened by the sudden demise of veteran journalist Lloyd Zawanda.

Statement for immediate release

The Malawi Chapter of the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA Malawi) is shocked and deeply saddened with the sudden demise of veteran journalist Lloyd Zawanda who passed on at Adventist Hospital in Blantyre Tuesday, July 25, 2017.

Until his death, Zawanda was Group Station Manager for Joy Media Group.

In an interview Wednesday morning, July 26, Joy Media Group Deputy Board Chair Anthony Kasunda said the demise of Zawanda was ‘a big blow to Joy Media Group.’

“Mr Zawanda was a founding member of Joy…He dedicated his life to the growth of the company and the media in Malawi. He was very humble,” Kasunda said.

Zawanda collapsed at his house in Chitawira morning hours of Tuesday, July 25 and was rushed to Gombwa Clinic in the area where he was referred to Adventist. He died around 9:30 pm the same day.

MISA Malawi joins Malawians in general and the media fraternity in particular, in mourning Zawanda. He has departed at a time the media sector in Malawi needed his skills and untiring professional guidance. Zawanda was a dedicated MISA Malawi member and a pillar of media freedom and freedom of expression. His untiring guidance and support to MISA and the sector at large will forever be missed.

Our condolences therefore go to Zawanda’s family, relatives and colleagues. We pray for Gods strength during this difficult moment.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.

Teresa Temweka Ndanga

Chairperson, MISA Malawi
