Alerts – media violations and victories

The Daily Times of Monday 26 January 2015 quotes Kadadzera as saying: “Do not take pictures. Private media houses are not allowed to take pictures here. Only Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), Department of Information or State House photographers are allowed to take pictures. If you will need pictures, arrange with the information officials, they will send you some.”

MISA Stance:

MISA Malawi Chapter Chairperson Thom Khanje described the police action as strange and promised to get to the bottom of the matter.

“It’s not right and proper for the police to bar journalists from taking pictures of the first lady. We will investigate and engage the relevant officials to make sure that this does not happen again. The First Lady is a public figure and it would be wrong for the police to bar journalists from taking pictures. Once you are a public figure, living on taxpayers’ money, you are obliged to make yourself available to the public which pays you and the media is one avenue through which public figures avail themselves to the public,” Khanje
